From The Village Voice premiere 3/4/12

blogs.villagevoice.com/music/2012/04/the_secret_history_sergio_premiere.php

Each song is based on someone they've known over these past two decades in New York. (Names are changed, though, to protect the barely innocent.) "These were friends, or peers, or just people I saw from the side of the stage, for whom finding their place in America, letting go of the indie dream, getting older—just surviving—was a spectacular challenge," says Grace. "And the style of each track is informed by the records I listened to, or the places I went with that person." In addition to this blessed cast of beautiful losers, New York itself is almost a character, from the squats of Brooklyn to the grey coastal towns of Long Island.

LYRICS

"Sergio"

I don’t know. I don’t know what we are. You say…you say that “we are young,” but I just don’t believe that’s true anymore. I don’t know what we are. I don’t know what we are. I don’t know.

I don’t know where we are. You say…you say “we’re in New York,” but I just don’t believe that’s true anymore. I don’t know where we are. I don’t know where we are. I don’t know.

Sergio it’s time to go, you’re talkin’ in your sleep, of oceans dark and deep. But the water is fine.
Sergio the stars are low, the night is crashing in. There’s nothing to begin. We are out of time.

You’re shakin’ like an animal, but the kids think that you’re dancing.
You’re creepin’ like a criminal, as you crawl across the landing.
And you don’t wanna hurt no one,
BUT THEY’RE JUST NOT UNDERSTANDING.

We stole the future...
From a tower in a vacant lot
We stole the future…
You spend an hour in our dour squat
We stole the future…
Your dogs are fed but we are not
We stole the future…
And now we’re gonna let it rot! And now we’re gonna let it rot!
CUZ WHAT WE’RE NOT IS ALL WE GOT

about

A NYC band with songwriter Michael Grace, Jr. and his long time co-conspirators from adored (but obscured) indiepop group My Favorite. Vocalist Lisa Ronson (daughter of glam rock legend Mick Ronson) debuts alongside Jamie Allison Babic (of Nouvellas.) They're creating a new form of post-pop from the rainy jangles of C86, the buzz & stomp of 70s glam/art rock, and the light & air of 60s girl groups ... more
